How can one tell if their car needs an alignment?

Diagnosing an alignment problem is more straightforward than one would think. There are many indicators for a bad alignment. The typical signs for a bad alignment include but are not limited to wearing unevenly, vehicle pulling to one side, and off-center steering.

It is highly recommended that you check if your car needs to have an alignment upon the purchase of new or used tires. Failing to do so can affect the tire life and cause many other issues when in contact with the road.

Do I Really Need an Alignment?

Alignment Wear

The tire in this photo was driven on a bad alignment which can be seen by the uneven wear on one side of the tire.

We get asked this all the time here at our shop, “why do we need to get an alignment?” Believe it or not, an alignment is more than just a safety precaution, it actually saves money in the long run. When one of your wheels is not aligned, it gets dragged along with the car, therefore, causing unbalanced wear on the tires. This is why you begin to see one side of the tire wear out more quickly than the other.

In rare cases, some vehicles may only need the front wheels aligned; but for the majority of cases, tire alignment is done on front and rear tires.

Due to the importance of proper alignment, any purchase of four tires (new or used) is eligible for up to $25 off their next alignment.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you check if your car needs to have an alignment upon the purchase of new tires. Failing to do so can destroy the life expectancy of your new purchase.

What happens during an alignment?

A car or truck alignment can be done within an hour depending on the busyness of the shop. During a wheel alignment, all wheel angles will be addressed. These angles include the camber, caster and toe.

The camber angle of the wheel is noticeable when viewing from the front of the car. It can be either a negative or positive camber. A negative camber can improve the performance of a car when it comes to turning a corner.

The caster angle of the wheel is noticed when steering. For example, when the steering wheel is released after turning a corner, the steering wheel will return back to its original position. The caster angle is responsible for the steering wheel return-ability.

Finally, the toe angle is noticed from a bird’s eaye view of the wheels. The toe will determine how much the wheels turn in or out when the vehicle moves straight forward or reverse.

In brief, a wheel alignment involves adjusting the angles of the wheel. These will address straight line stability, steering wheel return-ability, cornering performance and reduce the wear of the tire.

How often should one get an alignment?

Car or truck alignments should be done roughly every 6,000 miles or every time an oil change is performed. Wheel alignment service will ensure that your vehicle is running smoothly and get the most life expectancy out of the tires.

Can I do an alignment on unevenly worn tires?

An alignment can be done on unevenly worn tires. Keep in mind, getting regular alignments every 6,000 miles is a good way to prevent uneven wear from happening in the first place. This will save you time and money in the long run because you will increase the life of the tires.
